Time for Marriage Equality across the island - Adams

27 June, 2015 - by Gerry Adams TD

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has said that it's time citizens in same sex relationships right across the island of Ireland had the right to marry.

Speaking today from Dublin city centre, where he is attending the Pride Parade, Gerry Adams said:

“Today we should celebrate the success of the 'Yes Equality' campaign in last month's marriage equality referendum.

“We have come a long way from this time last year when I was still calling for the government to set a date.

“Thousands of people in same sex relationships across this state now have the right marry.

“As a republican party this act of equality and inclusiveness is at the heart of what Sinn Féin is about.

“But must now looks towards breaking down the barriers of equality for citizens in the North, as they continue to take their fight for marriage equality to the Assembly.

“As recently as last Thursday Derry & Strabane Council passed a motion stating that same sex couples should be allowed to marry by law. This is progress.

"Sinn Féin has fought for and promoted LGBT rights for thirty years and will continue to do so, with pride.

“It is the time that citizens in same sex relationships right across the island of Ireland had the right to marry."
