European Institutions circling the wagons on Greece – Matt Cathy MEP
Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West and member of the European Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Matt Carthy, has today called on the Irish Government to distance itself from the actions of the European Institutions who are attempting to bully the Greek people ahead of Sunday’s referendum.
“The remarks made by European Commission President Juncker yesterday highlight just how terrified the right wing elite of Europe are at the prospect of being held accountable to the people.
“The actions of the European institutions are as much about quelling the rising hope for change that has arisen through the growing support for left wing parties right across Europe as it is about protecting the Euro.
“This is the first time since the onset of the financial crisis that the actions of the Troika have been put before the people in a democratic vote and I for one commend Syriza for their decision to hold a referendum.
“This is not a referendum on whether Greece wants to leave the Eurozone – it is a referendum on whether the terms of the proposals offered by the Troika to the Greek Government are acceptable to a people brutalised by Austerity.
“The Irish Government, to our collective shame, have played their part and sided with the European elite despite the fact that it would be clearly in the interests of the Irish people for the Government to stand in solidarity with the Greek people and seek collective debt relief.
“Unfortunately our Government is too busy scrambling to secure its electoral fortunes to show the integrity and compassion needed to support the Greek people. They are on the wrong side of history.
"I am calling on the Irish Government to distance itself from the remarks made by Juncker yesterday and for the European Institutions to cease the ongoing threats and ultimatums and respect the right of the Greek people to determine their own destiny through democratic means."
