Rent Certainty needs to be a priority for the Government –Councillor Denise Mitchell
Following on from the Launch of the Simon Communities report this morning on Rent Supplement and Market Rents, Dublin City Councillor Denise Mitchell and Sinn Féin General election candidate for Dublin Bay North has said the government need to get real on rent levels.
“In some cases rents have increased by €300 or €400 per month. This is forcing many families into homelessness.
I am inundated with families who are either on rent supplement or on low incomes who are suddenly hit by huge increases in rent by their landlords.
Most of these families simply cannot afford to pay anymore.
They are pressed to the collar by years of Austerity.
She further added,
“Rent Supplement levels have not increased since 2013 despite the sharp increase in rents in the capital city.
The Government and Minister Alan Kelly have talked a lot about introducing some sort of rent cap but there has been very little action.
Their inaction is putting huge strain on homeless services in the city where we now have a situation where people are turned away as there are no spaces available.
The Labour party and Fine Gael need to act now to stop any more families facing homelessness.”
