PSNI must come clean on flags deal claim – Ó Muilleoir

2 July, 2015

Sinn Féin MLA Máirtín Ó Muilleoir has called on the PSNI to clarify if it made a back room deal with the PUP giving it the green light to erect unionist flags illegally in the Ormeau Road area.

The South Belfast MLA said;

"The PSNI need to clarify if they made a sordid deal with loyalists to facilitate them illegally erecting flags in the Ormeau Road area.

"After stating last year that it would treat the erection of these flags as a breach of the peace, the PSNI then stood by and watched while loyalists put up flags on the Ormeau Road.

"Those responsible for erecting these flags have now claimed that they had come to an arrangement with the police which would allow these flags to fly until September!

"Residents in the Ormeau Road area feel let down and very angry that not only have the police changed its position on flags on the Ormeau Road but that they may have done so as part of some secret deal.

"It's crucial for public confidence and trust in the PSNI to police effectively and impartially that they move quickly to clarify their position."
