International community has key role to play in supporting Palestine - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has said the international community has a key role to play in supporting the people of Palestine.
Speaking after hosting a delegation of Palestinian solidarity activists in Brussels, Ms Anderson said;
"Ireland has always been to the fore in supporting the people of Palestine. I was honoured to host a delegation of Palestinian solidarity activists, young and old, from across the north in the European Parliament.
"Members of the delegation met a range of Palestinian officials, including Shebli Hadi, the head of Palestine's mission to the EU, to discuss the latest developments in the region.
"They also took part in a hearing entitled 'Palestine - Where Next?’
This looked at issues around the Palestinian political prisoners, the illegal Israeli settlements and ongoing efforts towards reconciliation.
"We also heard from Israeli Knesset member Aida Touma Sliman, on the role Israel would play in a two-state solution.
"The role of the international community, particularly the EU, in supporting the Palestinian people was also discussed in an informative and engaging session.
"It is clear the international community has a key role to play in helping to bring a sustainable peace settlement to the region based on the recognition of the state of Palestine on the 1967 borders."
