Action rather than platitudes from the Taoiseach needed by fishermen – Ó Clochartaigh

‘There isn’t much use in the Taoiseach coming on a propaganda visit to Rossaveal, when his government’s policies are driving fishermen out of the industry’ according to Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

The Galway West/South Mayo Sinn Féin spokesperson made these remarks as the Taoiseach prepares to visit Rossaveal harbour today:

‘We’ll be hearing a lot of pre-election promises from the government over the next couple of months, but why hasn’t he visited Rossaveal in the last four and a half years?

‘It is ironic that he is coming now in the week when another boat, the Maggie C, is being sold off and leaving the port and as local fishermen are leaving the industry in their droves.

‘Fishermen are telling me that they are not getting any fair play from the state and that as a result very few younger fishermen are entering the profession as many more are retiring, or giving up. They are not getting a fair deal in relation to quotas, tonnage and regulation in a European context.

‘The criminal penalties, which this government promised to address, are still in place and are making criminals of fishermen and women who have only had minor administrative infringements. That is wrong and the Taoiseach should have ensured that something was done about them.

‘We have a brand spanking new pier in Inishmore with no fishing boats pulling up there because of the high landing charges. And, even though this is an island where every family was involved in fishing in the past, only two young people have entered the industry in recent years.

‘When a boat leaves a harbour they take with them five or six direct jobs. But the tens of thousands of euro they spend annually in local shops is also lost, the fish they provided to local processors is gone, the people who fix their nets lose another vital customer and there are serious implications for the local co-operative and the wider industry as well.

‘Instead of speaking out of both sides of his mouth the Taoiseach should be taking action to ensures these fishermen have an sustainable income and that younger fishermen are encouraged to come into the industry.’

Gníomh ar son iascairí ag teastáil seachas deá-chaint ón dTaoiseach – Ó Clochartaigh

‘Tá sé fánach an ag Taoiseach a bheith ag teacht ar thuras bolscaireachta go Ros a’Mhíl nuair atá polasaithe an rialtais ag díbirt iascairí áitiúla amach as an tionscal’, a deir an Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Deir urlabhraí Shinn Féin i nGaillimh Thiar/Maigh Eo theas an méid seo agus an Taoiseach le cuairt a thabhairt ar chalafort Ros a’Mhíl inniu:

‘Beidh cuid mhaith gealluntais réamhthoghcháin againn anois ón rialtas, ach nach maith nár tháinig sé ar chuairt go Ros a ‘Mhíl le cheithre bliana go leith?

‘Tá sé íorónach go bhfuil sé ag teacht anois agus bád eile, an Maggie C, dhá díol agus ag fágáil an chalafoirt an tseachtain seo agus iascairí go h-áitiúil ag fágáil an tionscal as éadan’.

‘Deireann na h-iascairí liomsa nach bhfuil siad ag fáil cothrom na féinne ón stát agus dá bharr sin gur beag iascaire óg atá ag teacht isteach sa tionscal agus cuid mhaith eile ag eirí as. Tá leatrom dhá dhéanamh orthu ó thaobh cuótaí, tonnáiste agus rialacháin di i gcomhthéacs na hEorpa.

‘Tá na pionóis choiriúla, ar gheall an rialtas seo go gcuirfí deire leo, fós ann agus muid ag déanamh coirpigh d’iascairí as faillí bheaga riaracháin a bheith déanta acu. Nil sé sin ceart na cóir agus ba chóir don dTaoiseach rud éicint a bheith déanta aige faoi seo.

‘Tá céibh bhreá nua in Inis Mór ach níl aon bhád iascaigh ag tarraingt suas inti mar gheall ar na táillí arda. Agus cé go mbíodh bunadh an oileán sin i mbun iascaireachta go traidisiúnta, níl ach beirt tagtha isteach sa tionscal sin as Inis Mór le blianta beaga anuas.

‘Nuair a imíonn bád ón gcalafort, imíonn cúig nó sé phost don dream a oibríonn uirthi freisin. Ach, imíonn na scórtha mílte euro sa bhliain a chaitheann siad sna siopaí áitiúla, bíonn an tsoláthar éisc do na monarchain laghdaithe, cailleann lucht deisithe eangaigh custaiméir eile agus bíonn impleachtaí tromchúiseacha aige don gcomharchumann agus an tionscal tré chéile chomh maith’.

‘Seachas a bheith ag teacht ag labhairt amach as an dá thaobh dhá bhéal, ba chóir don dTaoiseach rud éicint a dhéanamh faoi shlí bheatha na h-iascairí seo a shábháil agus iascairí óga, áitiúla a mhealladh isteach sa tionscal.’
