Emergency Summit of Eurozone Leaders provides opportunity for Irish Government – Matt Carthy MEP
Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands North West and member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee Matt Carthy has said that the Emergency Summit of Eurozone leaders scheduled for tomorrow evening provides an opportunity for the Irish Government to show solidarity with the Greek people.
“The bravery and overwhelming democratic wishes of the people of Greece as expressed in yesterday’s referendum result must now be acknowledged and respected by European Leaders.
“The Greek people have resolutely rejected the approach of Europe to the financial crisis to date and a new way forward must now be found.
“The world is watching for the response of European Leaders to the message given by the Greek people yesterday. This response will be viewed by many as a clear indication of the direction and values of the EU.
“Now is the time to reaffirm the founding principles of the European Union – solidarity, democracy and equality. The treatment of Greece and other peripheral countries during the financial crisis in particular has demonstrated a growing shift away from these core values.
“The Emergency summit called tomorrow provides an opportunity for the Irish Government in particular to place itself on the right side of history.
“It provides an opportunity to stand in solidarity with the Greek Government and make a strong case for the debt relief that is required in order to ensure the recovery of Greece within the EU.
"I am calling on our Taoiseach and our Finance Minister to support the efforts of Greece at tomorrow's meeting."
