Minister sleep walking through Dublin homeless crisis- Daithí Doolan
Dublin Sinn Féin city councillor Daithí Doolan has called on the Minister for the Environment to act with urgency to release the funds to address the homeless crisis in the city.
Speaking at tonight’s council meeting Cllr Doolan said:
“The department has only provided €37.1m of the €56.1m required to provide Dublin City's homeless services.
“This is a serious funding shortfall and if more money is not provided the council will run out of funding for homeless services by October 2015.
“We are currently spending money we don’t have and this projected deficit of €18.5m will be detrimental.
“We’ve gone from a homeless crisis into an emergency. 67 families were made homeless in this city in May and another 65 in June.
“All political parties need to work together to tackle this crisis and I am calling for an urgent meeting with the Minister and department officials to ensure that this funding is released as a matter of urgency.”
