Ruane speaks at Women in Leadership seminar
Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane spoke at the ‘Women in Leadership’ conference held today at the European Parliament Office in Dublin.
Ms Ruane said,
“I am delighted to have been invited to speak at the Women In Leadership conference.
“I spoke on the imbalance in the number of women in leadership positions in public and private life across the island of Ireland.
“Despite 52% of the population of Ireland being made up of women their participation in politics is around only 18%. While the number of women in leadership positions in areas like banking, judiciary and other areas of influence is also extremely low.
“I have recently returned from a conference in Sweden on gender equality and I brought some of the experiences I learnt there to this seminar.
“It is important woman play a major role in society and that we change attitudes and remove glass ceilings so we encourage more young women into worthwhile careers.
“This will only happen if they have confidence that promotion prospects are on an equal basis as men.”
