Final policy proposals for the rural proofing bill
West Tyrone Sinn Féin MLA and DARD committee member Declan Mc Aleer has welcomed the announcement today that the Executive has approved the final policy proposals for the rural proofing bill.
Mr McAleer said,
“The proposed Rural Proofing Bill will ensure the interests of rural dwellers are catered for in any development and delivery of policy and public services.
“It is important we make sure rural issues are an integral part of the development of government policy and public services. So I would congratulate the agriculture minister Michelle O’Neill for her determination in getting it through the Executive.
“Sinn Féin's commitment to rural proofing is testament in the fact Minister Michelle O’Neill will be the first government minister to introduce rural proofing on a statutory basis. Martin Ferris also bringing forward a private members bill on rural proofing in the Dáil.
“While the Executive signed up to rural proofing in 2002 the new legislation when enacted will help support vibrant, thriving and sustainable rural communities, where people choose to live, work, learn and play.
“Nearly 40% of people of the North live in rural areas and this bill will ensure they have the same access to services or opportunities as people living in urban areas.”
