Gaeltacht subcommittee ignoring Gaeltacht crisis – Ó Clochartaigh

8 July, 2015

Leagan Gaeilge Thíos – Irish Version Follows

Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has expressed his anger that he has received no response whatsoever from the Oireachtas Joint Committee with responsibility for Irish Language and Gaeltacht Affairs, in relation to a request for a hearing on the updating of the Comprehensive Linguistic Study of the Use of Irish in the Gaeltacht.

Speaking today he says:

‘I have written to the Chair and Clerk of the Joint Committee for the Environment, Culture & the Gaeltacht three times now, suggesting that they call a meeting of the Irish Language and Gaeltacht subcommittee as soon as possible to discuss the update to the Comprehensive Linguistic Study of the Use of Irish in the Gaeltacht, that Údarás na Gaeltachta recently undertook.

‘I suggested that Údarás na Gaeltachta, the author Conchúir Ó Giollagáin and representatives from Conradh na Gaeilge, Tuismitheoirí na Gaeltachta and Gaelscoileanna be invited to respond to the updated report.

‘I haven’t even received as much as a response to my request, even though I wrote on the 9th June, the 26th June and again today. In the intervening period I also raised the issue personally with the Chair, Michael McCarthy TD and with clerical staff who deal with the work of the committee and I still haven’t heard a word back from them.

‘My correspondence was all in Irish, which I thought was completely appropriate in the context of the request being made. I don’t know if that has had anything to do with the lack of response, or whether the joint committee simply has no interest in the issue I am raising.

‘I’m afraid that this once again is another example of the indifference that this government has in relation to the Irish language and Gaeltacht issues’.

Neamhaird iomlán ag Comhchoiste Gaeilge ar ghéarchéim Gaeltachta – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá fearg léirithe ag an Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh nach bhfuil sé tar éis freagra ar bith a fháil ar iarratas ar an gcomhchoiste Oireachtais, a bhfuil cúraimí Gaeilge & Gaeltachta orthu, maidir le h-éisteacht a ghairm faoin uasdátú ar an Staidéar Chuimsitheach Teangeolaíochta ar Úsáid na Gaeilge sa Ghaeltacht.

Ag labhairt dó inniu deir sé:

‘Tá scríofa agam trí h-uaire anois chuig Cathaoirleach agus Cléireach an Chomhchoiste Comhshaoil, Cultúr & Gaeltachta, ag moladh go ndéanfaí cruinniú don bhfochoiste Gaeilge & Gaeltachta a eagrú chomh luath agus is féidir chun an uasdátú ar an Staidéir Chuimsitheach Teangeolaíochta ar Úsáid na Gaeilge sa Ghaeltacht, a rinne Údarás na Gaeltachta, a phlé.

‘Mhol mé go dtabharfaí cuireadh d'Údarás na Gaeltachta, an t-údar Conchúir Ó Giollagáin agus ionadaithe ó Chonradh na Gaeilge, Tuismitheoirí na Gaeltachta agus Gaelscoileanna le fianaise a thabhairt maidir leis an uasdátú.

‘Ní fiú is go bhfuair mé freagra uathu ar m’iarratas, cé gur scríobh mé ar an 9ú Meitheamh, arís ar an 26ú Meitheamh agus arís inniu. Labhair mé go pearsanta leis an gCathaoirleach, Michael McCarthy TD agus le baill foirne a bhíonn ag plé le h-obair an chomhchoiste idir an dá linn freisin agus smid níor airigh mé ar ais uathu.

‘Is i nGaeilge amháin a bhí mo chomhfhreagras, rud a shíl mé a bhí ceart i gcomhthéacs an t-ábhar a bhí mé ag ardú. Níl fhios agam an bhfuil baint ar bith aige sin le m’iarratas, nó an é nach suim leis an gcomhchoiste atá freagrach as na réimsí seo sa gceist thábhachtach atá ardaithe agam?

‘Tá amhras orm gur léiriú eile é seo ar easpa dáiríreacht an rialtais seo i leith na Gaeilge agus na Gaeltachta.’
