Social Housing must be integrated- Cllr Sarah Holland
Mayor of South Dublin County Council Sarah Holland has asked for a balanced approach to new social housing builds.
“Minister Alan Kelly has earmarked funds to begin a small amount of social housing builds.
“Here in South Dublin County, there are concerns that the bulk of these houses are going to be in Tallaght.
“There are only 70 for Rathfarnham, and although these are welcome, they are just a drop in the ocean.
“There have been no sites identified in Terenure, Lucan or Templeogue.
"Tallaght is a thriving urban community, but some areas are among the most deprived in Europe.
“Building more homes here, although they are welcome, will compound some of the social problems already in existence.
“Our group leader Cathal King successfully argued during recent Development Plan meetings that there would be no new infill developments in West Tallaght whilst other areas had none.
“Cllr Louise Dunne asked that current estates be maintained and repaired before any new infills are considered and the entire Sinn Féin team have been consistent in asking for a balanced approach in order to create mixed tenure integrated estates, all across the county.
“Any new homes are welcome in the current housing crisis, but must be subject to thoughtful and considered planning to ensure the best outcome for our county into the future.
“The Development Plan has been drafted after a considerable amount of work by the planning department and the entire council, with submissions reaching into the hundreds.
“It is now going out to pubic consultation and your views will be needed.
“Help us to shape the county – have your say”
