Tóibín marks the 20th Anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide
Sinn Féin’s Peadar Tóibín TD, has today marked the 20th Anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide, and passed on his support to Bosnian community in Ireland who are leading the commemorations here.
Deputy Tóibín said:
“The official ceremony to commemoration the Srebrenica genocide takes place in Srebrenica today.
“20 years ago today the worst massacre in Europe since World War Two began. Over 8,000 men and boys were slaughtered purely because of their religion and ethnicity. The international community completely failed to prevent this genocide.
“On Tuesday afternoon I stood with members of the Bosnian community in Ireland who solemnly remembered the massacre outside Leinster House. I want to commend them for all their efforts to commemorate those killed and bereaved in the Srebrenica massacre.
“Sinn Féin fully supports all international efforts to bring to justice those responsible.
“While we remember the victims and families of this brutal massacre it is important to recognise the continued tensions and instability in the region.
“I call on the Irish Government, and all international actors, to redouble their efforts to support peace, democracy, and reconciliation in the region.”
