Árd Mhéara Críona Ní Dhálaigh attends Islandbridge WWI Commemoration

11 July, 2015 - by Críona Ní Dhálaigh

The Sinn Féin Árd Mhéra of Dublin, Críona Ní Dhálaigh, laid a laurel wreath at the Cenotaph at Islandbridge, Kilmainham to commemorate those who lost their lives in the World Wars, particularly the estimated 60,000 Irish men and women from all parts of the island of Ireland who died in those conflicts.

The event was hosted by Royal British Legion Republic of Ireland and Críona Ní Dhálaigh, as Árd Mhéara Bhaile Átha Cliath, was invited to attend and to lay a wreath in that capacity.

Cllr Ní Dhalaigh is the first elected member of Sinn Féin to attend the service in the city and was joined by the Lord Mayor of Belfast Arder Carson and the Speaker of Assembly Mitchel McLaughlin.

Speaking after the commemoration, Árd Mhéara Ní Dhálaigh said:

“Today we remember the many thousands of Irish people who died during these conflicts, including those from this city.

“Sinn Féin has engaged with the Royal British Legion for many years now and as first citizen of the city of Dublin I am here representing the whole city.

“One of my key priorities as Mayor was to incorporate the principle of inclusivity and my attendance here today, along with my Sinn Féin colleagues, speaks to this ideal.”
