Government fan the flames of Dublin housing crisis-Cllr. Daithí Doolan
Today's report that shows that there are a record 42,106 people on Dublin City Councils housing list confirms that Government inaction is fanning the flames of Dublin housing crisis.
Sinn Féin Cllr. Daithí Doolan, chair of Dublin City Council's Housing SPC, said:
"Today's report in the Irish Times confirms what many of us have said, that Dublin is in the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis.
"But the current Minister for Environment, Alan Kelly continues to ignore it. Hoping it will all just go away. He continues to ignore our request to meet and discuss solutions to this crisis. This inaction is turning the crisis into a state of emergency.
"Government's promises of extra funding for housing date back to last December. Minister Kelly continues to peddle the myth that he is providing €3bn for housing but Dublin City Council had not seen one cent of this promised money.
"Dublin's Lord Mayor requested a meeting with Minister Kelly last Monday week. We still await his response. The minister must meet with Dublin City Council as a matter of urgency. We need to discuss why he has failed to release €18.5m funding for homeless services, failed to release money for tackling voids and failed to release funding to build council housing in Dublin.
"We need action on housing not promises or press statements."
