Jobs put at risk by lack of Department of Agriculture resources – Ferris
Sinn Féin TD and Spokesperson on Agriculture Martin Ferris today expressed concern that jobs are being put in jeopardy by a lack of resources in the Department of Agriculture.
Deputy Ferris was speaking after seeing an email sent to Shannonside Foods in Straffan, Co Kildare from the Department of Agriculture explaining the necessary controls cannot be put in place for the company to fill orders for the slaughter of horses at the plant, due to lack of department staff.
The company has the orders, but cannot slaughter unless the necessary veterinary and technical staff are provided by the department to carry out official controls.
Deputy Ferris said:
“This lack of resources in the Department is putting jobs in jeopardy. This company has been allocated a licence, but cannot proceed unless the proper controls are provided by the department.
“There are consequences when cutbacks and reductions in staff numbers at the Department are implemented. In this case, a company is being prevented from functioning to its potential and jobs are being put at risk as it cannot meet its orders.
“This situation deserves urgent attention from Minister Coveney and I call on him to act to resolve this situation as soon as possible.”
