Government fails to reach its own Targets on Galway Hospital Waiting Lists – Ó Clochartaigh

15 July, 2015

Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has today hit out at the failure of the Government to fulfil its target of ensuring that no patient waits longer than 18 months on hospital waiting lists for an appointment or treatment.

Ó Clochartaigh says:

“The latest figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund reveal that there are almost 1,400 patients on the outpatient waiting list at University Hospital Galway waiting in excess of two years for their treatment.

“It is a truly shocking figure and shows clearly that this Government has not provided sufficient resources to effectively tackle waiting list figures.

“This is despite the fact that the Government has consistently promised it would ensure that no patient was on the waiting list for treatment or an appointment for a period of longer than 18 months by the end of June 2015.

“To add insult to injury, the overall waiting list at the hospital has increased further and now stands at a whopping 37,231 compared to the figure of 36,888 at the end of May 2015.

“While I have no doubt that the staff at the hospital are doing all that they can to provide the best possible care for patients and tackle the waiting lists, the systemic underfunding of the hospital over the past number of years has wreaked havoc.

“It is truly galling that our frontline workers are consistently asked to do more with less while this Government have awarded themselves with pay increases after the next election.

“Our hospital has the dubious distinction of having the highest number of people on the waiting lists in the state – the people of Galway do not need more empty promises from this Government – they need to see real action and urgency in addressing this issue once and for all.”

Teipthe ar an Rialtas a chuid spriocanna féin maidir le liostaí feitheamh a bhaint amach – An Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh

Tá cáineadh láidir déanta ag Seanadóir Shinn Féin Trevor Ó Clochartaigh ar an rialtas inniu mar gur theip orthu a gcuid spriocanna féin a shroichint, nach mbeadh aon othar ag fanacht níos mó ná ocht mhí dhéag ar liosta feitheamh ospidéil nó ar choinne le haghaidh cóir leighis.

Deir Ó Clochartaigh:

“Taispeánann na figiúir is déanaí ón gCiste Náisiúnta um Cheannach Cóireála go bhfuil beagnach 1,400 duine ar liosta na n-othar seachtrach ag Ospidéal na hOllscoile Gaillimhe agus iad ag fanacht níos mó ná dhá bhliain ar chóir leighis.

“Is figiúir scannalach amach is amach é seo a léiríonn nach bhfuil dóthain acmhainní dhá chur ar fáil ag an rialtas seo le dul i ngleic leis na liostaí feitheamh.

"Seo ainneoin go bhfuil geallta arís agus arís eile ag an rialtas nach mbeadh othar ar bith ar liosta feitheamh nó ag fanacht ar chóir leigheas níos mó ná 18 mí, roimh deire mí an Mheitheamh 2015.

“Le barr a chur ar an mí-ádh tá an liosta feitheamh iomlán atá ag an ospidéal imithe chun donais ar fad anois agus é ag 37,231 i gcomparáid le figiúr de 36,888 ag deireadh mhí na Bealtaine 2015.

“Cé nach bhfuil amhras ar bith orm ach go bhfuil baill fóirne san ospidéal ar a míle dícheall ag iarraidh an t-aire is fearr gur féidir a thabhairt d’othair agus chun dul i ngleic leis na liostaí feitheamh, tá scrios déanta ag na ciorruithe damanta a tugadh isteach le blianta beaga anuas ar sheirbhísí ann.

“Cuireann sé múisiam orm go bhfuil an rialtas seasta síoraí ag iarraidh ar oibrithe túslíne níos mó a dhéanamh le nios lú acmhainní agus iad tar éis ardaithe pá a bhronnadh orthu féin i ndiaidh an chéad olltoghchán eile.

“Tá sé de mhí-chlú ar ospidéal s’againne go bhfuil na liostaí feitheamh is airde sa Stát aici – ní theastaíonn a thuilleadh geallúintí folamha ó mhuintir na Gaillimhe – teastaíonn fíor aicsean uainn ar bhonn phráinne leis an fhadhb seo a réiteach ar deireadh thiar thall.”
