Extend voting rights to North and Irish diaspora - McElduff

15 July, 2015 - by Barry McElduff

Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has said people living in the North and the Irish diaspora should be allowed to vote in Seanad and Presidential elections.

Mr McElduff said;

"Newly released research has shown that just more than 3,000 people in the North will be eligible to vote in the next Seanad elections because they are graduates of certain Irish universities.

"Voting in Seanad elections should not be restricted to these graduates but should be extended to everyone in the North.

"As well as Seanad elections, people living in the North should also be allowed to vote in Presidential elections.

"Sinn Féin has called for the extension of the vote at local councils, in the Oireachtas and at the Constitutional Convention.

"Irish citizens living abroad should also be given the opportunity to vote in elections at home.

"This is particularly important as we have now reached the point where more people in the United States will be eligible to vote in the next Seanad election than in Roscommon."
