Kenny must ensure Magdalene Redress Scheme is fully implemented – Ó Clochartaigh
Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh has called on the government to honour the recommendations of the Quirke Report in relation to the Magdalene Redress Scheme.
Senator Ó Clochartaigh said:
“Yet again, an Irish government is failing to vindicate the rights and dignity of women detained in Magdalene Institutions.
“Over 520 women have signed up for the Magdalene Redress Scheme which required them to indemnify the state.
“This was done on the understanding the government would honour the recommendations of the Quirke report in full.
“A key aspect of the Report was access to medical care, in its broadest terms.
“Over the past number of weeks, women in Ireland began to receive their much needed medical cards.
“Unfortunately, they are inadequate for their health needs as
they do not entitle them to the range of services promised when they signed up.
“Worryingly, the cards identify the women as survivors of residential institutions which is a serious breach of privacy.
“These women have a long history of being labelled and depersonalized by the state and its institutions.
“Have we learned nothing? Yet again, these now elderly survivors of appalling institutions run by nuns are being treated with disdain and indifference by the state?
“I am calling on Taoiseach Enda Kenny to ensure the women get what they are rightfully entitled to as a matter of urgency.”
