Cllr Curran welcomes first step towards new social housing website
Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Sinn Féin Councillor Chris Curran has welcomed the council’s support for his motion that will see a report drawn up exploring the development of a new council website to allow council tenants advertise the properties for transfer.
Cllr Curran said:
“I’m delighted that this motion was passed, as taking steps to deal with the social housing supply and overcrowding is a key priority for the Sinn Féin on Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.
“A website of this nature could provide those seeking larger or smaller accommodation units with greater accessibility to adequate housing.”
“The motion also includes a provision for scalability and interoperability between councils and other housing bodies that hopefully, will bring other councils onto the website as a shared service.
“Such websites are nothing new. There are plenty of rental and house sale websites in existence, in Ireland already.
“Other countries, Britain for example, already use websites focusing on social housing and there’s no reason why technology cannot be further integrated into local government.
“Ireland is a technology leader, in my own constituency of Sandyford Glencullen, we have technology giants like Microsoft and we shouldn't fear technology in the service delivery of local government.
In fact, we should embrace it.
“Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is a forward thinking council and well equipped to see the fulfilment of such a service.
”Sinn Féin wants to work towards eliminating barriers to social housing. A website of this nature is just the first step towards ending the practice of separate housing lists that prevent people from transferring back to the council housing list, once they move into the tenancy of a housing agency.”
