Milk price drop could mean farmers go under – Ferris
Sinn Féin Agriculture Spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has said predictions that falling milk prices will be the trend for the next half year are very worrying.
Speaking in Leinster House, after a Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Deputy Ferris said:
“Dairy farmers were encouraged by the government by Teagasc and by the banks to invest heavily in their herds and facilities to prepare for the end of dairy quotas.
“At the time, Sinn Féin were warning against overspending and advising caution, but the government spin at the end of March was like we had all won the lottery.
“Now, many farmers are under pressure from the banks to make repayments they cannot afford due to the falling milk prices and some are also being hit with the super levy.
“Minister Coveney will have to intervene in Brussels to ensure that intervention prices are adequate to prevent Irish farmers going under.”
