Donnelly urges Tánaiste to take action against insurance companies

23 July, 2015 - by Paul Donnelly

Sinn Féin general election candidate for Dublin West, Cllr Paul Donnelly has urged Tánaiste Joan Burton to take action against insurance companies that have announced they will not be insuring cars which are more than fifteen years old.

Speaking today Cllr. Donnelly said:

"The reality is that a huge number of people drive cars which are older than fifteen years.

“In most cases it is a necessity for those people to do so because it is not financially viable to buy a new car.

"People use their cars for a variety of reasons including getting to and from work, it would be outrageous if in the years ahead people could not commute to work by car because they cannot get insurance"

"The whole idea makes a mockery of the NCT process, ultimately if a car is deemed fit for the road then its owner should be allowed get insurance."

"This is yet another financial pressure on ordinary families who are struggling already, I certainly hope the Tánaiste will intervene".
