McKay welcomes continued reduction in plastic bag use
North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has welcomed the continued reduction in use of plastic bags.
Mr McKay said:
“The continued success of the legislation that I put before the Assembly in 2011 is something that I very much welcome.
“At the time that I was working on the Private Members Bill I stated that the levy would not only raise revenue for environmental programmes but would help create and protect jobs in the community but it would also greatly reduce the problem of plastic bag litter in our parks and community environs.
“I am glad to see that this has been the case and would like to see the programme extended to include other sources of litter such as drinks and fast food containers with proceeds earmarked for environmental clean-up projects and clean energy programmes."
