Kelly calls on Ford to back inspection of PSNI's role in supporting legacy inquests
Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly has called on Justice Minister David Ford to commission an immediate inspection by HMIC of the PSNI's role in supporting legacy inquests.
The Policing Board member said;
"In March the Policing Board wrote to Justice Minister David Ford asking him to support a HMIC inspection of the PSNI's role in supporting legacy inquests.
"There are clearly concerns about delays and issues around the disclosure process for inquests and the added distress that is causing to families who are trying to find out the truth of what happened to their loved ones.
"David Ford has now responded saying that he will not commission such a review, citing financial constraints as his reason.
"That is unacceptable and simply does not stack up given the fact that he has a substantial underspend in his department's budget.
"David Ford should stop trying to find excuses and should commission this inspection.
"Families are entitled to truth and should be able to have confidence that the coronial inquest system will allow them to access that truth."
