The Government need to face up to the fact that the setting up of Irish Water has been an absolute shambles and stop throwing away taxpayers money on it, says Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking today he says:

“The latest Eurostat chapter in the sorry saga of Irish Water shows once more that the money wasted on the setup of this company and their unnecessary metering campaign would have been far better invested in proper infrastructure and upgrading of water and sewerage systems.

“Irish Water have been installing water meters throughout Galway. They would have been better off replacing the lead pipes, upgrading infrastructure and dealing with water quality issues across the city and county.

“‘Sinn Féin activists recently took samples of homeowners’ tap water from Shantalla, Bohermore and Ballinfoile. On a number of occasions, dangerously high levels of lead were identified, well above that set out under EU health standards. The recent water contamination episode in Moyola Park illustrates the importance of having a clean and safe water supply free from restriction whether that be of a financial or environmental nature.

“We have substandard water supplies in Carraroe, Leenane and many other areas and there are delays in installing proper sewerage treatment in Carraroe, Spiddal, Athenry and many, many other areas.

“If the government had listened to Sinn Féin and the ordinary people on the ground from day one much of the financial waste and mismanagement would have been avoided. It is time for this government time to do the right thing – abolish Irish Water, scrap the charges and invest in the infrastructure in a sustainable way.” ENDS

Caithfidh an rialtas infheistíochta dhéanamh in infreastruchtúr riachtanach seachas airgead a ligean le sruth ar Uisce Éireann– Ó Clochartaigh

Caithfidh an rialtas admháil go bhfuil praiseach iomlán déanta acu le bunú Uisce Éireann agus eirí as a bheith cur airgead cáiníocóra amú air, a deir Seanadóir Shinn Féin Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt dó inniu deir sé:

“Tá an caibidil is déanaí seo faoi Eurostat i scéal truamhéileach Uisce Éireann mar léiriú arís eile gur chóir an t-airgead a cuireadh amú ar bhunú na comhlachta seo agus córais méadair nár theastaigh a fheistiú,  a bheith caite ar infheistiocht in infreastruchtúr ceart agus uasghrádú córais uisce agus séarachais na tíre.

“Tá Uisce Éireann i ndiaidh a bheith ag feistiú méadair ar fud na Gaillimhe. B’fhearr doibh a bheith taréis na píopaí luaidhe a athrú, infreastruchtúr a bheith uasghrádaithe agus a bheith tar éis dul i ngleic le fadhbanna ó thaobh caighdeáin uisce le n-ól ar fud na cathrach agus contae.

“Ghlac gníomhaithe Shinn Féin samplaí le déanaí ó soláthar uisce tí ar an Seantalamh, Bóthar Mór agus Baile an Phoill mar shampla. I gcasanna áirithe léiríodh go raibh léibhéalacha an-ard luaidhe iontu, i bhfad ós cionn an méan a cheadaíonn an tAontas Eorpach. Léirigh an t-eachtra a bhain le truailliú an tsoláthar uisce ag Páirc Moyola sa chathair le déanai freisin an tábhacht atá le soláthar uisce sábháilte a bheith ar fáil saor ó shrianta airgeadais nó comhshaoil.

“Tá soláthar uisce faoi bhun an chaighdeán againn ar an gCeathrú Rua, ar an Líonán agus in áiteanna go leor eile agus tá moill curtha ar fheistiú córais ceart chóireála fuíolluisce ar an gCeathrú Rua, sa Spidéal, i mBaile Átha an Ri agus cuid mhaith ceantair lena chois.

“Dá mbeadh áird tugtha ag an rialtas seo ar Shinn Féin agus gnáth chois mhuintir na tíre ó thús bheadh cuid mhaith den chur amú airgid agus droch bhainistíocht seo seachanta acu. Tá sé in am anois ag an rialtas an rud ceart a dhéanamh – deire a chur le hUisce Éireann, deire a churi le táillí uisce agus infheistíocht ceart a dhéanamh san infreastruchtúr ar bhealach inmharthana.”
