Victims and families entitled to truth – McCann

5 August, 2015 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann said this morning that victims and families should not be prevented from achieving truth and closure because of the failure to reach agreement on other issues.

Jennifer McCann said:

“The British and Irish governments need to implement those elements of the Stormont House Agreement which deal with legacy issues and the past.

“The British government in particular has an onus to resource the mechanisms agreed at Stormont House.

“Many victims and families have been waiting for more than four decades for the truth.

“They should not be prevented from achieving truth and closure because of the failure to reach agreement on other issues.

“The two governments can and should proceed with establishing the Historical Investigations Unit (HIU); improving Legacy inquests and establish the Independent Commission on Information Retrieval (ICIR).”
