Education system must serve all children regardless of creed – Adams
Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD has spoken out on the growing controversy over school patronage.
Gerry Adams said:
“An open, inclusive and accessible education system is a prerequisite for a modern, democratic and pluralist society.
“That is not what we have right now and we need to move as speedily as possible to such a situation.
“The current education system is not fit for purpose in 21st Century Irish society.
“It is not in anyone's interest for the vast majority of schools to remain under the control of one particular church.
“Access to education is a basic right and should not be dependent on the religious persuasion of a child's parents.
“Taxpayers money, not the Church, is what funds the education system, and Irish parents are demanding greater choice.
“The UN has criticised the slow pace of change regarding control of education here.
“Personally, I happen to believe it is also in the Church's own interest to divest more schools and at a quicker pace.
“The Sinn Féin position is clear. The education system needs to reflect Irish society now and to serve the needs of all children regardless of creed.”
