Sinn Féin fighting austerity North and South – Senator David Cullinane

7 August, 2015 - by David Cullinane TD

Speaking at a conference in Omagh today Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane said Sinn Féin is fighting austerity across the thirty-two counties of Ireland and will take the message of a fair recovery to the electorate North and South in the upcoming elections.

Senator Cullinane said austerity from the conservative parties here is no different to the austerity from the Tory party in London and Sinn Féin is showing that there is an alternative.

He said;

“We are facing into Assembly and General elections in the coming months and Sinn Féin has a huge opportunity to change the direction of this country.

“We are fighting austerity across the thirty-two counties of Ireland and we are bringing our message of a fair recovery to the electorate North and South.  In turn, more and more people are turning to Sinn Féin.

“Austerity is a failed economic concept whether it comes from the conservative parties of Fine Gael, Labour or Fianna Fáil here or whether it comes from the Tory Party in London.

“Seven years on from the beginning of the recession we are seeing the beginning of a fragile recovery.  However it is those who were forced to carry the burden of the recession that are now being left behind by the recovery.

“Families are struggling with debt, with a housing crisis and our public services are in disarray.

“Sinn Féin says the recovery must be fair and it must be ambitious.

“The fair recovery that we talk about is about jobs, health, housing, childcare and rural Ireland and all of it underpinned by the politics of Irish Unity and the necessity of the all-Ireland economy.

“It is also about a new type of politics based on transparency and accountability and the work being done by Daithí McKay, Pearse Doherty and Peadar Tóibín on the scandal of NAMA shows how much we can do in this regard with a joined up approach.

“We are already rolling out our Fair Recovery campaign through door to door canvas, dozens and dozens of public meetings, meeting groups across the state, key policy launches and our budget alternative in September/October all leading to the launch of our election manifestos ahead of the upcoming elections.

“Our message to the people is clear, we can have more of the same from the conservative parties or we can scrap austerity and begin a fair recovery under the leadership of Sinn Féin.”
