Review of Barbara Walsh missing person case welcomed – Ó Clochartaigh

8 August, 2015

The decision by An Garda Siochána to review the thirty year old investigation into the disappearance of Barbara Walsh from her home in Carna, Connemara, in 1985 has been welcomed by Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking today the Sinn Féin Senator, who himself is from the Carna area, says:

“The Walsh family, who I know well, want to find out what happened to their mother. She was reported missing from her home in Rusheenamanagh, Carna on the 29th June 1985, having last been seen at a party in her home on the 22nd June that year and has been on the missing persons list ever since.

“Mrs. Walsh, the mother of a young family, was 33 at the time of her disappearance. It came to my attention that the Gardaí were making inquiries into her disappearance once again and I asked Chief Superintendent Tom Curley for clarification.

“He has confirmed to me that -‘this case has always remained open and was never closed. As part of the ongoing and continual review process of all outstanding serious investigations from within the Galway Garda Division the Chief Superintendent has directed that this particular investigation be reviewed at this time. This investigation is not subject to a ‘Cold Case’ review and it is being conducted by officers from the Galway Garda Division.

“He also told me that ‘As part of this review a number of new lines of enquiry have been generated and a significant amount of information has been gleaned as a result’.

“He concluded that ‘As this is very much a live and ongoing investigation it would not be appropriate to disclose specific details of any information gleaned as a result of the current review’.

“I welcome this review and sincerely hope that it will indeed shine a light on the disappearance of Barbara Walsh. I would expect that the investigation will be prompt, thorough and might finally bring closure to the family of Barbara Walsh who have been distraught ever since they lost her’.

Fáilte roimh athbhreithniú ar chás Barbara Walsh atá ar iarraidh – Ó Clochartaigh

Tá fáilte curtha ag an Seanadóir Trevor Ó Clochartaigh roimh chinneadh An Gharda Síochána athbhreithniú a dhéanamh ar fhiosrúchan tríocha bliain d’aois, maidir le cás Barbara Walsh, a d’imigh gan tasc gan tuairisc óna teach cónaithe i gCarna, Conamara i 1985.

Ag labhairt dó inniu deir Seanadóir Shinn Féin, gurbh as ceantar Charna dó féin ó dhúchas:

‘Teastaíonn ó mhuintir Bhreathnach, a bhfuil aithne mhaith agam orthu, fáil amach céard a tharla dá máthair. Tuairiscíodh ar an 29ú Meitheamh 1985 go raibh sí ar iarraidh, tar éis di a bheith le feiceáil don uair deiridh ag cóisir ina teach i Ruisín na Maithníoch, Carna, ar an 22ú Meitheamh an bhliain sin agus tá sí ar liosta na ndaoine atá ar iarraidh ariamh anall ó shoin.

‘Bhí Barbara Walsh, máthair teaghlach óg nuair a chuaigh sí ar iarraidh, tríocha trí bliain d’aois ag an am. Cuireadh in iúl dom go raibh fiosrúcháin dhá dhéanamh arís maidir len í a bheith ar iarraidh agus d’iarr mé ar an bPríomh Cheannfort, Tom Curley soiléiriú a thabhairt faoi seo.

‘Tá sé deimhnithe aige dhom gur – ‘fhan an cás seo oscailte i gcónaí agus nár dúnadh ariamh é. Mar chuid de phróiséas leanúnach agus síor-athbhreithnithe ar fhiosrúcháin thromchúiseacha ó laistigh de Rannán Gárdaí na Gaillimhe, tá treoir tugtha ag an bPríomh Cheannfort go ndéanfaí athbhreithniú ar an gcás sonrach seo ag an am seo. Ní faoi fhiosrúchán “Cás Fhuar” a bheidh an t-athbhreithniú seo agus is oifigigh ó Rannán Gardai na Gaillimhe atá ina bhun.

‘Deir sé liom freisin ‘Mar chuid den athbheithniú seo tá roinnt línte nua fiosrúcháin ginte agus cuid mhaith eolas suntasach breise tagtha chun cinn mar thoradh air’.

‘Chríochnaigh sé ag rá ‘Ós rud é gur fiosrúchan beo agus leanúnach atá anseo ní bheadh sé oiriúnach a bheith ag nochtadh sonraí faoi leith faoi aon eolas atá faighte mar thoradh ar an t-athbhreithniú reatha’.

‘Fáiltím roimh an t-athbhreithniú seo agus tá súil agam i mo chroí istigh go scallfaidh sé solas ar na cúinsi a ndeachaigh Barbara Walsh ar iarraidh.  Bhéinn ag súil go mbeidh an fhiosrúchan tapaidh, cuimsitheach agus go dtabharfaidh sé an scéal chun clabhsúir do chlann Barbara Walsh atá trína cheile go mór ariamh anall ó chaill siad í’.
