Academic selection infringes children's human rights

13 August, 2015 - by Chris Hazzard

Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Chris Hazzard has welcomed the call by the NI Human Rights Commission (NIHRC) to stop academic selection of children in schools.

 Mr Hazzard said,

“I welcome the report to the United Nations by the NIHRC reiterating their call for all academic selection for children to be abolished.

“The report delivered on International Day for Youth is quite strong that academic selection of children is an infringement of their human rights and should be stopped.

“The NIHRC first highlighted the problems associated with academic selection back in 2008 and have consistently called for its abolition.

“I would call on those who still advocate academic selection to look at this report and join with us in protecting the human rights of all of our children by working to removing selection from our schools.” ENDS/CRÍOCH
