British Government need to lobby European Union on milk price

18 August, 2015 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said that the British government must support the dairy industry by lobbying the European Parliament for a review of the European intervention price.

 The Agricultural spokesperson said,

“I welcome the follow up meeting between DARD Minister Michelle O’Neill, Agriculture Ministers from Scotland and Wales and the British Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Liz Truss to address the current crisis faced by the dairy industry.

“DARD Minister Michelle O’Neill has been highlighting for months now the fact that farmers from the North need a special intervention in order to protect them from total meltdown.

“The Ministers from Scotland and Wales will also bring a stronger emphasis on getting support at both central Government and European level for dairy farmers.

“The British Government need to move quickly to lobby the European parliament for a review of the European intervention price.

“I also welcome the news that some leading supermarket chains have begun to implement a fairer price for milk and call on all others to follow suit in order to help farmers move back into profitability.”
