Taoiseach must not delay in publishing final Fennelly report - Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD
Sinn Féin TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh has said that Taoiseach Enda Kenny must publish the final Fennelly Commission report without delay.
Speaking this evening Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:
“The Fennelly Commission of Inquiry was established to investigate the practice of recording phone calls to and from Garda stations.
“The Commission’s remit was then extended to examine events leading up to the controversial resignation of Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan.
“Mr Callinan stepped down just hours after a visit to his home by the then-Secretary General of the Department of Justice, Brian Purcell.
“The Taoiseach has always denied sacking the former Commissioner.
“Brian Purcell has since moved from his post and this was followed by the resignation if the Minister for Justice Minister Alan Shatter.
“These events and the subsequent revelations by Garda whistle-blowers shook public confidence in the administration of the Gardaí.
“It is vital that this confidence be restored. The public have a right to know the truth behind the controversy. The publishing of this report, into events that occurred over a year ago, must not be delayed any further and I urge the Taoiseach to publish the report without delay.”
