Irish Government response to refugee crisis must be imaginative and generous - Adams
Sinn Féin Leader Gerry Adams TD has called for a more urgent response to the refugee crisis said the Irish Government needs to be imaginative and generous.
Gerry Adams said:
"The escalating refugee crisis requires a much more urgent response by all in positions of political leadership and responsibility.
"The international community, including the European Union, has failed in its responsibilities to people fleeing persecution and war in the Middle East and North Africa.
"All EU member states can and need to do more by welcoming greater numbers of refugees.
"The Irish Government must be imaginative and generous in its response to a crisis which has a deep historical resonance for the Irish people.
"The Government needs to begin putting in place adequate systems and infrastructure to accommodate those seeking refuge.
"An increase in the numbers of refugees being allowed into Ireland is welcome but the Government response must reflect the widespread feeling among Irish citizens that more needs be done to relieve the suffering being witnessed on our TV screens."
