Response to Housing Crisis A Disgrace- Cllr O’ Brien
20% of all Local Property Tax monies which was allocated for housing capital remains unspent.
Sinn Féin Cllr Shane O Brien has reacted to the news that of the €53million raised from the Local Property Tax in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown €10.7million was returned to Central Government through the equalisation fund.
“15% or €8million was returned to residents through a reduction approved at by the local council.
“This left €34m to help fund local services, of which was €18m was allocated for Housing Capital under the direction of the Minister for the environment and Local Government, however €10.7m remains left sitting in a bank account unused.
“It is astonishing in the midst of a housing crisis that 60% of monies allocated remain unspent. The ruling majority in DLRCC comprised of FG/FF and the Greens no doubt blame Labour Minister Alan Kelly for dragging his feet but whoever is to blame action needs to be taken immediately.
“I am demanding the Minister responsible and his department urgently issue guidelines on how these funds can be used and that the Local Authority once received implement immediately.
“In real terms this €10.7m funds could be used to build homes for the entire medical priority transfer list in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown.”
