Governments pandering to unionist electoral interests – Murphy
Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy said today that the Irish and British governments are pandering to unionist electoral interests. Conor Murphy was speaking before today’s meeting of the Stormont Business Committee.
Conor Murphy said:
"Clearly the institutions are facing a crisis. That has been the reality for some time now.
"The contrived crisis has been provoked by the crass party politicking of Mike Nesbitt who is incapable of providing leadership.
"And in a further failure of leadership the DUP are foolishly responding to the stunt politics of the UUP.
"This only encourages those enemies of the peace and political processes who murdered Jock Davison and Kevin McGuigan and those who direct them.
"The two governments have also moved on to that ground by supporting the adjournment of the Assembly and in doing so are pandering to unionist electioneering.
"There is also a real crisis which affects all our people and which we, as political leaders, need to address.
"That crisis revolves around the massive assault that the Tory government has launched on public service spending, on the benefits of low-income families and on the welfare state.
"You cannot save the institutions by closing them down, what is required is leadership in the institutions to deliver for all our people.
"So Sinn Féin’s focus remains on continuing to do the job in hand and our ministers will remain focused on that very important work.”
