Mayor Holland commends the community spirit of the people of Rathfarnham
Mayor of South Dublin Sarah Holland has commended the community spirit of the people of Rathfarnham and all across the county, in the wake of the heartbreaking refugee crisis afflicting Syria and neighbouring countries.
Cllr Holland said
“I issued an appeal for donations from those in my local area, which is Rathfarnham/ Ballyboden.
I was bowled over by the response, with warm winter coats, mens shoes, candles and little primus stoves coming in.
These items will be much needed in Calais and further afield once the winter sets in.
Volunteers from across Ireland have come together to organise relief and their generosity of spirit is heart-warming.
The Visit group have organised a fundraising breakfast in Tallaght Adventure World, in conjunction with Cllr Dermot Richardson, and Tallaght Person of the Year Mary McLaughlin has also organised a donation drive.
I will be dropping off the men’s items in Jigsaw, Belvedere Court in town and all the women’s and children’s things will be going to Irish Muslims Peace and Integration Centre (IMPIC), who will be saving them to go to Hungary.
Eid will soon be upon us, and the refugees will be stuck without homes, making perilous journeys on foot to try and get their families to safety and a better life.
Can you imagine having to spend Christmas with your family in a freezing tent or worse, on the side of the road?
My heart goes out to them, but I am so proud of the efforts being made by locals to ease their suffering a little bit.
The community spirit and generosity of the people of our county is immense, and one of the reasons I am proud to live here”
