Seán Crowe TD addresses rally in support of refugees in Dublin
The Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Seán Crowe TD has addressed a rally in support of refugees in Dublin.
Deputy
Crowe said:
“Europe is facing the biggest refugee crisis it has faced since World War 2.
“Currently
we have no real workable legal route into Europe and a bureaucracy that
thrives on telling people where they cannot go and where they cannot stay.
“Most of you will have been aware of the scale of the refugee crisis for many months
and years before now, but the photos of the 3 year old Alan Kurdi whose
dead body washed up on a Turkish beach collectively
shocked the world.
“The huge solidarity and support that we have seen from the Irish people
since then has been amazing. We need to harvest that support and ensure
that we have a collective, united and community led approach to the
refugees that will be resettled in Ireland.
“A small minority are attempting to use this crisis to spread fear, racism,
sectarianism and hate. We all have a collective duty to challenge these
hate filled lies head on and this solidarity rally is just one of those
methods, as well as sending a strong message of compassion to those
fleeing this brutal war and unimaginable circumstances.
“Our
thoughts today centre on those fleeing famine, drought, poverty war and
oppression.
“Our thoughts today are with those who are walking, traveling overland to
what they hope is to safety and a new life.
“Our thoughts are with those who with no other choice are crammed into boats,
rubber dinghies- modern day coffin ships.
“Our thoughts today are with those groups and individuals who support and
provide food and shelter.
“Our thoughts today are with those refugees who are coming to our shores and
that receive a truly warm Céad Míle Fáilte.
“I hope that the warmth and support that is clearly evident throughout Ireland is built upon and that we use this small window of opportunity to begin to do things differently in Ireland.”
