Anderson welcomes Official Brucellosis Free (OBF) status
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed the announcement that the EU Commission has approved the north’s application for Official Brucellosis Free (OBF) status.
Speaking after the announcement was made by DARD Minister Michelle O’Neill, Ms Anderson said,
“Minister Michelle O’Neill announced that from midnight on 28 February 2015, it was exactly three years since a confirmed case of brucellosis was reported in the north of Ireland and therefore an application for OBF status could be submitted to the commission.
“Countries such as Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Luxembourg, Sweden, The Netherlands, Britain and Norway had already achieved OBF status and this was another step to improving and protecting this industry.
“Thankfully, the EU Commission confirmed achievement of OBF late last week. In light of the recent agri crisis, this is fantastic news for our dairy and beef farmers and now means that the whole island of Ireland joins is recognised as being entirely free from this disease.
“I commend the farming industry, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and my party colleague Michelle O’Neill on the hard work they have put in to seeing this devastating disease eradicated.
“However, all involved parties must continue to maintain their high levels of vigilance to avoid complacency and to ensure any chance of the disease returning is evaded.” ENDS
