Budget 2016 needs to focus on equality and not be a giveaway budget – Reilly

14 September, 2015 - by Kathryn Reilly

Sinn Féin Senator Kathryn Reilly has today called for the upcoming budget to focus on equality instead of being a giveaway budget concerned with auction politics.

Senator Reilly stated:

“Various media reports over the past number of days have hinted at the possible focus of the government’s upcoming budget for 2016. The information detailed by the media and a number of government politicians seems to outline that the budget will be a giveaway one targeting key voting blocs.

“If there is a recovery, as both Fine Gael and Labour have articulated over the past number of months, then let that be a fair recovery, a recovery for all. Budget 2016 should give back to those who have carried the burden over the past number of years. It should also focus on the abolition of water charges and the local property tax, and in doing so put money back in the pockets of those who need it most.

“Intelligent and adequate investment in public services should also be prioritised. This budget should be about equality in Irish society, if we have the potential for a lasting recovery let us make that recovery fair and just for everybody in the state.”
