Sinn Féin MEPs meet with governing bodies of IFA, Ulster GAA and Ulster Rugby
Sinn Féin MEPs Martina Anderson and Matt Carthy have this evening met with sporting codes delegation to discuss their ‘Sport Uniting Communities’ framework document.
Speaking after the meeting, which took place in Brussels, Ms Anderson said,
“In the last parliamentary term, I lead a delegation made up of representatives from the Irish Football Association, Ulster GAA and Ulster Rugby here to Brussels, to inform them of the opportunities that Europe had for them.
“Therefore, I was delighted to have what was essentially a follow up meeting this evening and I am so pleased to see how the group has developed, maximising EU funding opportunities and building strong relationships throughout the community.
“Listening to the key messages that are to be included in the ‘Sport Uniting Communities’ framework, it is obvious that this partnership has had a very positive impact and it is one to be valued.
Ms Anderson continues,
“Sport is a powerful tool in bringing people together and through joint delivery and collaboration the delivery of programmes such as ‘Sport – a Home for Lifelong Volunteering’, ‘Game of Three Halves’ and ‘Promoting Equality, Tackling Poverty & Social Exclusion through Sport’ it was highlighted that as well inspiring healthy competition, sport encourages involvement, education, and friendship.
“The multi-sport partnership between the Irish Football Association, Ulster GAA and Ulster Rugby has grown and evolved over the last number of years and I am thrilled that the three Associations are committed to further strengthening the partnership and developing their joint work.
“I commend the group and also our colleague Carál Ní Chuilín, in her role Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure for the sterling work they have done over the past few years and providing great opportunities to our community. I wish them luck for the launch of the ‘Sport Uniting Communities’ framework in Belfast next month and I look forward to working with them in the future.” ENDS
