Health outcomes of patients should be priority - McLaughlin

21 September, 2015 - by Maeve McLaughlin

Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin has said the health outcomes of patients should be paramount in efforts to reduce waiting lists.

"There is no doubt that waiting lists are a great cause for concern among patients and urgent action is needed to tackle the problem.

"But there is something flawed about a health system where consultants can move between the public and private systems.

"Surely that can't be in the best interests of the health outcomes of patients.

"We should explore the lessons from the Scottish health system. When they moved back towards the traditional NHS system they made minimal use of the private sector.

"We must ensure the health budget is spent in the best interests of patients at all times."
