Reconciliation a priority to strengthen peace process – Kearney

21 September, 2015

Sinn Féin National Chairperson Declan Kearney has called on the British and Irish governments and all political parties to make reconciliation a priority to strengthen the peace process.

Speaking on International Day of Peace, Mr Kearney said;

"As we face into a new round of negotiations, amid a deepening political crisis in the north, we must collectively be reminded that peace is made and secured where conflict exists.

"It is vital that the Irish and British governments, the Executive parties and indeed wider civic society make healing and reconciliation an immediate priority.

"Building peace goes way beyond the remit of politicians alone; all voices must be heard. That is why Sinn Féin has called for a 'coalition for reconciliation' across Irish society.

"Embracing the challenge of reconciliation and healing will require courage; and a willingness to open our hearts and minds to the need for respect, generosity, forgiveness and trust.

"Taking our peace process for granted is not an option."
