All parties must work together to protect farmers
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said that local parties need to stand together if we are to protect the farming industry and reverse the crisis in the dairy sector.
Mr McMullan said,
“Throughout the crisis facing farmers especially those in the dairy sector Sinn Féin has consistently stood shoulder to shoulder with the industry in demanding a fairer return for their produce.
“Throughout the process the British Government has failed to recognise the special circumstances of farmers here and failed to persuade the EU of the need for an increase to the invention price for dairy products.
“The DUP abandoned the farmers by failing to show up at a major debate on the future of farming last week in the Assembly.
"They, as well as the other parties, must now take their responsibilities seriously and stand with Sinn Féin in working towards a better deal for farmers from both the British and EU Governments.
“The Minister needs to be praised for her work in demanding an equitable settlement for farmers to ensure sustainability and growth in the agriculture sector.
“Sinn Féin will continue to support the farmers in securing the best outcomes for the agricultural industry here.”
