North Dublin needs viable transport solutions now- Louise O’Reilly
Louise O’Reilly, Sinn Féin election candidate for Dublin Fingal, has stated that the government has again demonstrated a lack of ambition with the news that the DART will only be extended to Balbriggan by 2022.
Speaking today Ms O’Reilly said:
“The citizens and commuters of North Dublin need transport solutions now.
“The current public transport services in places are wholly inadequate and will not meet increasing demand as the population expands in the area in the coming years.
“Fingal and the surrounding area is woefully bereft of viable, reliable transport links and this government’s record on this matter has not been good.
“The most popular means of travelling to work in Fingal is by car (60%), and according to the last census just over 22,000 people commuted using public transport (bus or rail).
“Their average journey time was 38 minutes and 47.6% of workers faced a commuting time in excess of 30 minutes.
“This isn’t a productive use of time and the high car usage is reflective of the dearth of efficient public transport options.
“With 93,146 households in the area, which is projected to increase significantly by 2020, the government needs to tackle this problem with realistic solutions.”
