Government must act to reach renewable energy targets – Colreavy
Deputy Michael Colreavy, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources has called on Minister Alex White to take the necessary action to ensure that Ireland reaches it renewable energy targets for 2020.
Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Colreavy said:
“Reaching Ireland’s renewable energy targets, as set out under international agreements, are not just something we have to do; they are also something we should do.
“A lack of a coherent energy strategy has caused us to be behind on our targets
“The forthcoming White Paper on Energy, which is expected in the coming weeks, must give clear guidelines as to how we will approach our energy needs over the next number of years.
“Renewable energy production is obviously a key component of reaching our energy needs.
“It is important that the government takes an active role in developing renewable energy for the country’s needs.
“This must be done in conjunction with the rolling out of a greater level of retrofitting across the state.
“This is an essential and effective means of reducing the level of carbon fuels used in households, especially in older buildings.
“Not reaching our 2020 targets will have serious implications for the country, not just from the financial penalties which the public will have to bear, but will also hinder Ireland’s potential to create jobs and industry.
“Ireland cannot afford to depend on imported fossil fuel any longer.”
