HAP scheme not meeting rental needs in Rathfarnham- Mayor Holland

23 September, 2015 - by Sarah Holland

Mayor of South Dublin County Council, Cllr Sarah Holland, has found that there are just six landlords in the Rathfarnham electoral area who have accepted HAP tenants.

The figures were outlined in a question submitted to the September full council meeting.

Cllr Holland said

“Rathfarnham is a popular area, and rents are quite high.  My family and I were paying over €1000 a month for a small two bed up until this year, and we were lucky to have moved in well before rents skyrocketed.

“The same property would now command €1400 per month which would leave it out of the reach of some families.

“HAP (Housing Assistance Payment) was mooted by Minister Alan Kelly as the solution to all of our housing problems, but it is no magic wand.

“Less than 1% of landlords are accepting rent allowance or HAP – these schemes can only work in conjunction with rent caps.

“There are only 310 HAP properties throughout the county, with a list waiting on housing of almost 9000.

“Minister Kelly needs to re-examine his housing strategy.”
