Commitment to Gaeltacht Quarter welcomed-McCorley
Sinn Féin MLA Rosie McCorley has welcomed the commitment from both the DCAL Minister Carál Ní Chuilín and Education Minister John O’Dowd to the Gaeltacht quarter in West Belfast.
Ms McCorley said,
“It is clearly visible from the Gaeltacht Quarter Recall Summit today that the Irish language is not only flourishing but bringing real benefit in cultural and economic terms to this part of the city.
“With the centre piece of primary and secondary schools delivering education through the medium of Irish we have seen a growth in the number of people who have now grown up with Irish as their principal language.
“As children grow into adults this has manifested itself into a community that socialises and does business through the medium of Irish.
“This growth which has the full support of both ministers is due to the hard work of implementing a strategy from Irish language enthusiasts, community groups, local council and the departments.
“This positive review will no doubt be the catalyst for further development in the area of Irish language in terms of promoting the quarter through tourism, education and entrepreneurship.”
