Adams welcomes Colombia peace advances

24 September, 2015 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD has welcomed the major breakthrough in the Colombian peace talks between the Colombian government and the FARC that are taking place in Havana.

Mr. Adams will be in Cuba next week and expects to meet with negotiators.

Deputy Adams said:

“I want to warmly welcome the agreement reached on justice issues between the Colombian government and FARC negotiators in negotiations in Havana.

“The image of the Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and the FARC leader Rodrigo Londono, known as Timochenko, shaking hands was hugely important and a historic moment for Colombia.

“Sinn Féin has long supported the peace talks. Since 2012 Paul Maskey MP, Martin McGuinnes MLA, and Conor Murphy MLA have all visited Colombia, Conor also visited Havana in 2013 to meet the negotiators and Gerry Kelly spoke to negotiators when they travelled to Belfast.

“I will travel to Cuba next week and I hope to meet the negotiators to discuss these developments and their path to peace.”
