O’Brien welcomes moves towards supervised injection sites in Ireland
Sinn Féin TD for Cork North Central Deputy Jonathan O’Brien today welcomed Junior Ministers Aodhán Ó Riordáin’s commitment to publish legislation before Christmas that would allow for the establishment of a supervised injection centre in Dublin.
Deputy O’Brien said;
“We witness vulnerable people with addiction issues injecting in public on a daily basis in our city centres and it is a matter of great concern.
“Not only is this connected to anti-social activity but there is also an alarmingly high death rate among Irish drug users.
“This is a public health issue and it is our view that establishing a supervised injection centre is the right move in order to reduce health risks connected to using.
“Ultimately we would like to see injection centres provided on a needs basis outside of Dublin, but this is a step in the right direction as they have been shown to work elsewhere reducing risk and often steering people towards drug treatment.
“This should not be seen as a solution to Ireland’s drug problem but we support this initiative.”
