Removal of PSNI pull push test welcomed
Sinn Féin MLA and member of the Policing Board Caitríona Ruane has welcomed the decision by the PSNI to abandon the push pull test as a requirement in the recruitment process.
Ms. Ruane said,
“While it is widely acknowledged that police officers need a high standard of fitness to carry out their duties this test was failing many women.
‘The number of women failing the recruitment process due to this test was disproportional to men and therefore hampering the process of encouraging more women to take up a career in policing.
“I welcome the decision by the PSNI to change the fitness test and measure an applicants physical ability in other ways.
“I would also call on the PSNI to review other recruitment practices that may be a barrier to women becoming officers so we can see a higher representation of women having a career in the PSNI.”
